Movement / Flow - 20min

Actually wasn't too bad today. The 400W wasn't anywhere near as challenging as it has been in the past. It really didn't even feel very difficult until the last 2 rounds. I hovered between 409W - 425W and 151W - 212W. I felt good on the bike today. I coupled the biking with some front rack and wrist mobility. I'm trying to develop more opening in my triceps, biceps, and delts so I don't have to rely on wrist flexion.

A
Clean & Jerk - complete a 2RM (20sec cap, start chest to deck)

Result: 225 / 275 / 305 / 315x / 315x

Bring on the boo boos. Caught one of the cleans wrong and smoked my collar bone of the left side. Shit is really bruised up now and quite tender to the touch.

B
Hang Clean - 10 UB for time @ 245#

Result - :22

Quite slow for me on this. I had to take a good amount of time to make sure the bar didn't slam on the bruise. I'm not really looking forward to how this is going to feel tomorrow.

C
Thruster - 20 for time @ 135# (4min cap)

Result - :36

I was able to find and cut up a bit of a thin gymnastics mat to place over the injured area. Felt okay but still bothersome.
+
Movement / Mobility - 20min
Choice Cyclical - 20min

I'm glad we're doing this again and that they extended the deadline. Another week will allow my wrists to heal a little more as well as my collar bone. I hate it when the bar smacks down on it and that happens.

A
Push Jerk - in 6-8 sets build to tough single from the rack

Just got a little cocky and tried to go for a 10# PR on this move. Just wasn't explosive enough and failed to lock out. Either way, wrist and hands felt pretty good today. The bars in hand felt okay, but when I attempted to warmup my shoulders with HSPU, I could support myself. I think the large difference in the degree of flexion between the 2 played a significant role.

B
Power Clean & Push Press - 4 x 1.1; rest 15sec + 2min (build to tough complex)

Result: 185 / 225 / 275x / 275

275# is all I could really handle. I'm not sure happy about that, honestly. It felt pretty rough.

C
Back Squat - build to tough single; rest as needed

Result: 355 / 395 / 435 / 455 / 475

This was a 10# PR and I feel like I could've hit 500# today. Baby steps though.

D
Shoulder Press - build to tough single; rest as needed

Result: 135 / 185 / 205 / 225 / 235x

I kind of knew 235# was going to be risky and I was a little ambitious. I got about half way up and wrist wasn't really feeling it so I dropped it.

A
Hang Power Snatch - 5 x 5 UB; rest 3min (135/155/185/195/205/185/185)

185# is about all my right wrist and hand could handle. I attempted 195# but it was pretty rough. After the 2nd rep, I had to drop it. I mustered through the pain at 185#, but couldn't pick up my balls for 195#.

B
Hang Clean High Pull - 5 x 5 UB; rest 3min (245# across)

Felt light.

C
KB Thruster - 4 x 10 for time @ 2p ea hand; rest 2min

Result - :21 / :19 / :24 / :31

Boy that got spicy. Was able to keep my wrists pretty sturdy, but this actually busted me up good, from a ventilation standpoint. I was hurting. Videos below:

Round 1

Round 2

Round 3

Round 4

+
30sec Row @ 95% effort (1000W)
10 BBJ @ 30""
2min AB @ EN1
30sec Row @ 95%
10 TTB
2min AB @ EN1
30sec Row @ 95%
10 Power Snatch @ 135#

1000W on the rower was not within the realm of possibility. I busted my ass to try to get it, but the highest I could hit was 998W...I was quite surprised, honestly. The BBJ were actually performed as Burpee Box Overs (as prescribed in the GRIDScore), just to get a feel for it. Surprisingly, they actually didn't feel too terrible. The primary limiting factor was my lunch still sitting in my stomach. T2B were unbroken, Snatches were unbroken.

A
Front (High Bar Back) Squat - 3,3,2,2; rest 3min (build to tough double)

Result: 315 / 405 / 435 / 435

Both wrists were hurting something terrible when I tried to set up for the front squat, so I decided to do heavy back squat instead. I did attempt the crossover method for front squat but I've never done that before and I couldn't find the balance point. That prompted the decision to do back squat. Stuck with 435# on both sets because it felt quite heavy. Strength didn't exactly feel on point today. It get okay, just not perfect...which was to be expected anyway.

B
Clean Pull - 3,3,2,2; rest 3min (build to tough double)

Result: 315 / 405 / 435 / 455

455# felt pretty heavy...but it was 455#, double pronated grip, in oly shoes...basically, not what I'm used to. In hindsight, I probably should have stayed lighter to focus on explosiveness.

C
DB 2-arm Shoulder Press - build to 8RM; rest as needed

Result: 80# (could've gone heavier, but this is the heaviest we have at the box)

Didn't feel great on my wrists and hands but it also wasn't unbearable. I was able to maintain a pretty stiff wrist the whole time which probably saved it.

EMOM for 6min
Min-1 - 5 BBJ @ 30"" + AB @ 85% in remaining time
Min-2 - 8 TTB + AB @ 85% in remaining time
Min-3 - 5 Power Snatch @ 135# + AB @ 85% in remaining time
Rest 3min
x2 Rounds

BBJ and T2B were butter, AD was rough (held 400W+), and power snatches were not fun. Had to drop every time due to my wrists. Overall, this EMOM was very tough. Enjoyable, but tough.

That minute gets spicy. SURPRISINGLY, it really didn't kick my ass until the last round. I'm not sure why, but I didn't feel very gassed at all after the 1st 2 rounds. That was exciting to me. I think I could PR the 3 min test...maybe.

A
Split Jerk - in 5-6 sets, build to 315 from the rack; rest as needed

Result: 135 / 225 / 275 / 315 / 315 / 315

This was pretty buttery today. Quick, tight, and explosive. This is the easiest 315# has gone up, from what I can remember in my past experiences.
+
EMOM for 8min
Odd - 5 Thrusters @ 135#
Even - 45sec AB @ EN1

Got my breathing up a little more than was comfortable, but it was still butter. I started feeling a little bit of discomfort in my left hand and wrist during this. I also felt a little bit during the split jerks as well. I'm not sure what from, but I just fought through it. Just laid down that buttery spread.

+
EMOM for 9min
1) 6 BBJ @ 24""
2) 8 TTB
3) 6 Power Snatch @ 135#

No real issues here at all with any of the moves other than breathing (to be expected). The BBJ were actually a lot easier than anticipated. I actually did these at 30" not 24", my bad. The biggest issue I had with this was how much all 3 moves took my breath away. I wasn't happy with that at all, but I know that it's bound to happen since I'm still fighting off this fucking chest cold.

20min AB @ EN1

Kept this very, very smooth. Probably less than 100W for half of the spin.

Dartmouth PMR is what I've been using and it is really helping.

Kyle-
I hit ~ 12 bar muscle-ups in warm-up today and I wish I would've filmed them. They felt effortless. I wish I could string them together, but every time I come down, I feel like my shoulders are going to rip out of place. I figured out that if I can manipulate the 'leverage', the movement just kind of flows. Pretty cool.

A
Squat Snatch - in 6-8 sets build to 225-245# by feel

Result: 135 / 135 / 185 / 215 / 235 / 235 / 255 / 255

215#, 235#, and 255# were all accidents. Thought I had on all 10's but I grabbed a pair of 15's by mistake...which makes sense why all those weights felt a little heavier than expected. This felt as expected: lethargic, moderately disconnected, and a little uncomfortable. Let me explain, yesterday, I found myself with quite a few fire ants on my left hand and wrist...needless to say, they didn't mind biting the living shit out me. This left my left hand, wrist, and fingers a little swollen which limited my ability to hook grip the bar properly. Regardless, happy that I could hit 255# twice...even if it was by accident.

B
Hang Power Cean - 4 x 3 UB; rest 2min (245# across)

Other than the grip issues, this was butter. Probably should have warmed up my front rack positioning a little bit more. Other than that, no issues. Really feel like I can know out the 245# hang clean tester in sub-13s. That rebound off the quads is badass.

This got me breathing pretty good. Actually caused me to cough up quite a bit of phlegm and other gross mucus shit that the lungs produce. Had to dumb the AD down to Z1, EN1 didn't feel too great after ~ 5 min.

Open WOD 16.3

7 min AMRAP
10 power snatch @ 75#
3 bar muscle-ups

Result: 2 + 10 (36 reps)

Actually really, really happy with this. I honestly did not think I would be able to complete 1 muscle-up, and I freaking did 6 in less than 7 minutes. This is insane to me. I never thought I'd be at this point in my life...especially with all the life events and illness that has been going on with me and my family lately. Really, really happy with this one.

Friday, March 11, 2016

Just dabbled with some bar muscle ups and ended the night with 12...this is 7 more than I've ever completed in a session. Really happy with it, honestly. Last time I did bar muscle ups was months ago. After this I hit 15 minutes of low gait and 30 minutes mobility.

Mobility until class starts

I just can't catch a break right now. After all the bullshit we've been through, I woke up this morning with a cough, runny nose, slight fever, and some squirts. This persisted all the way up to and through tonight's session. I think that it's just the high amount of stress lately.

A
Power Clean & jerk - build to moderate single for the day; rest as needed (305ish)

Result: 225 / 225 / 275 / 275 / 295 / 305 / 315 / 315

Didn't feel super tough, but didn't feel super great either. Mechanics felt okay, but power felt very low relative to last week. Bummed.

B
Hang Power Snatch - 5 UB @ 155 / 185 / 205; rest 3min b/t sets (keep volume of build up sets low)

155# and 185# felt okay, but 205# felt very rough. I barely made the last rep and it was a squat snatch. Quite disappointed with the performance here.

+
12 Thrusters @ 135# AFAP
3min AB @ easy recovery pace
x2 Rounds

Result: DNF

Called it after the first round because I failed to perform this UB. This was demoralizing, BUT I'm glad that I felt like shit and performed like shit today instead of this coming Thursday. I was very tempted to continue with the session, but I wasn't going to be worth a damn. Train smarter, not harder, right? I fucking hurt today and I hurt bad. I'm not exactly sure why. It's probably just DOMS or due to being a little hungry tonight. Oh well. As mentioned before, glad I felt like shit today and not later on.
